The thoughts of Chairman John

Hi everyone,

Can we be moving into February already? We have picked up on all of our regular activities, not the best time of the year for Petanque, - 6 of us ventured out, and I must admit the hot chocolate was very welcome afterwards.

Those of you who came to our social afternoon, I believe, had an enjoyable time, all the hard work put in to entertain us proved to be a winning combination, the quizzes, a variety of reminiscence from the past with the music of the time, and Elspeth's talk on the history of Upchurch was very well received, probably something of an eye-opener to many of us.

You may also notice that we have given Jan and Ann a break from the onerous job of selecting raffle prizes every month, but will be reinstated at various times, with the Coronation and other Festivals.

This year’s chosen charity is looking very productive so far, as you know we have been working hard on various extra events with proceeds earmarked for the Church Bell Tower.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all our new members, I'm sure you will be able to enjoy some of our activities.

UpARA Newsletter - January 2023

Happy New Year, UpARA members,

You will notice… that we have an added session this month, the 20th of January, which is intended to be a cross between a coffee morning and a monthly meeting. We have a talk around 2:00pm on the History of Upchurch from Elspeth. Join us and bring your friends, doors will be open from 1:00pm. Please also let us know if you can help in the kitchen or in any other way. This would be greatly appreciated; we can only run our sessions and activities with your support.

We have another one planned for the 24th of March which will include a mature drivers presentation (we all know we are great drivers, but it doesn’t hurt to be reminded of the basics every now and then!).

Just prior to our first lockdown… you will remember that we had several UpARA t-shirts produced. Lockdown somewhat hampered our sales, and we still have a few left in various sizes. These are ideal if you partake in any of our activities and are a snip at just £15! If you would like to purchase, please Email us, or see a committee member at one of our meetings.

Membership renewals… are due at the end of February, after which there will be a one-month grace period for payments. If anyone is not intending to renew for the next year, please let us know so we can offer your place to others. Further details to follow.

The Thoughts of Chairman John

Hi everyone,

Another year has gone (where did that go?), and good wishes to all for a happy and peaceful 2023.

December was quite a month with our Salute to Christmas trip to the Inn on the Lake and our Christmas Party (the first for three years!) with great entertainment from Leyton and meal/service etc from the social committee and helpers.

A big thank you also to Elspeth who stepped in after our planned speaker had to cancel, and gave us a very insightful update on what’s been happening at Smile Malawi since first visiting us in 2014.

A big thank you to Upchurch's Co-op who were extremely helpful to us in providing a great Christmas Party on December the 16th.

Buddy and Llandudno payments… Anyone who has reserved a place to see Buddy at the Marlowe on the 11th of April, payment in full is due by or at the January meeting on January the 20th. Likewise, deposits for those who have reserved a place for the Holly & Mistletoe Holiday in November to Llandudno is also due. Please see Malcolm or Brenda if you wish to go or to be put on the reserve lists.

Regards

UpARA - December 2022 Newsletter

Hello UpARA members,

Christmas Party December 16th

We have a few tickets available for our Christmas Party on the evening of the 16th of December. Open to non–members, why not bring a friend(s), doors open at 6:45pm, with a 3-course meal being served from 7:15pm, and entertainment from the very talented ‘Leyton’ to follow; it promises to be a great festive evening as in previous years. Please Email:
uparaupchurch@gmail.com or Text: 07802 250773 for more information.

Festive Mince Pies, Santa, and a Free Raffle!... As a warm-up to Christmas, (and a way to keep warm!), please join us for our Christmas Coffee Morning on December 6th. There will be a free raffle, a festive feel and who knows… Maybe a visit from Santa and his Elf…

The Thoughts of Chairman John

Hi everyone,

"I don't believe it" to quote a well-known saying, having what may have been the last Turkey and Tinsel in my lifetime! Allegedly, just because the "Woke Fraternity" decided it may offend the Vegans using the word Turkey. No problem, we are taking a "Holly and Mistletoe" holiday next year, so all will be happy!

This year's Turkey and Tinsel was still exceptional. Debbie our Courier and Capt. Rob our Driver, managed to conjure up days of sunshine for our trips and were more than flexible with our destinations. Those of us who took the additional evening trip to the Babbacombe Theatre were given total entertainment from start to finish once again.

We still have our own Christmas entertainment to enjoy:- Tuesday 6th Dec, we have our special Coffee Morning including a free raffle (and Santa). The following Tuesday "A Salute to Christmas" at the Inn on The Lake is very well subscribed, and then we have our Christmas Party, many of our new members will be more than surprised with the quality of the meal and the entertainment! thanks to the "Social Degenerates" as usual headed by Chef John Tutt.

So much to look forward to in the next few weeks and next year.

Regards

John W

The Final balance for the Bournemouth trip is now due. There is still late availability for any couples or friends prepared to share, who would like to join us.

Please Note… Our activities in the New Year restart on Tuesday 3rd January with Coffee Morning, Art, and Table Tennis. Line Dancing will restart on Wednesday 11th, and our January Kurling session has been rearranged to the 9th of January.

The committee have... reluctantly decided that there will be a charge made to our Friday afternoon meetings as from our January meeting. We have had to look at our income/expenditure challenges going forward and hope everyone will understand. The charge will be £1 for members and £2 for non-members.

Thanks to those who attended and made our Quiz Evening such fun. Over £400 was made and this will now be added to our running total for the St Mary's Bell Tower Restoration Fund.

The Thoughts of Chairman John

Hi everyone,

The end of another hectic month, I can't believe how many activities we've undertaken over the last few weeks. This included the Badminton trial which was well subscribed albeit a bit too much on the same day as the Tennis! We will look to have another trial on a different day, early in the New Year.

The least publicised of our activities is the Monday Kurling, run by Ann Rolfe. How many of our members have thought of trying out an afternoon session of Kurling? As the name suggests, it's based on the actual "Curling" that we can watch at the Winter Olympic Games, where the participants all wear winter clothing and skim massive lumps of Granite, sweeping the ice to ensure it is guided to the winning position on the target! UpARA's version needs only to be pushed by means of a custom-made "Stick" hence a more leisurely game. Our Kurling equipment was one of our very first purchases when we first started as an ‘ARA’ back in 2014 - Why not give it a go - on the first Monday afternoon of the month, you will be pleasantly surprised, refreshments and chat included.

Our latest Friday Speaker Bob Ogley’s (Mr Kent) talk about the Great Storm was really well received. Being a great fan of Bob's, I took two books for him to sign and only returned with one, (did anyone pick up my Doodlebug one, by mistake?).

Regards

The Thoughts of Chairman John

Hi everyone,

What a month to remember! in the beginning, we had a Queen, and now at the end of the month, we have a King, fortunately not a regular occasion.

I'm sure quite a few of us can remember the death of King George 6th; at the time, I was at school in Sussex.

I remember we were all called into the large classroom (we only had 3) the headmistress announced that the King had died. As a nine-year-old, it didn't move the earth for me, but the coronation was a completely different event, as we entered the second Elizabethan era, what an introduction. I can remember our lounge full of neighbours from our close, as we had had a TV for a few years, (my father was one of the original "gadget men" as I remember, but it used to spend more time in the repair shop than at home), but it did us proud on that day!

Let us hope our new King will inherit his mother's example...

My final bit is the same old plea, "If you have some new ideas for events, activities or trips, we are always trying to open up something new, we also have the option to co-opt willing people to help out on the committee.

Here's to the new monarch.

John W

Our second attempt to complete our Regents Canal walk, unfortunately, was also cancelled due to the weather. This will probably now take place in the Spring.

Did You Know

Did you know that Riviera Travel have an affinity partnership with KentARA?

If ever you book with Riviera and mention this, together with the name, UpARA, then a commission is received by us once the holiday is completed. To date, over £70,000 in commission has been raised by KentARA clubs in this way.

Dates

Dates for our first two fundraising events for the Church Bell Tower fund have been set.

On the afternoon of 21st October, there will be a ‘Race Day’ where you can join in a fun afternoon and maybe win some money to boot!

On the evening of 11th November, there will be another of our popular Quiz Nights.

Please support us and keep both dates free, more details later... Also, this month ‘History of Upchurch’ talk on 24th September in St Mary’s - See flyer below.
Monthly Meeting

Our meeting this month is a week later than normal, on the 3rd Friday of the month. Our guest speaker, Tony Harris is returning to give us his unique take on ‘Secret London’. Many of you will remember Tony in his previous guises as Henry VIII, Sherlock Holmes, and, more recently, as a Pantomime Dame.

The thoughts of Chairman John

Hi everyone,

I can't believe it's that time of the month when you are subjected to my ramblings. We have been so busy throughout the month, as usual. I can't believe that this past week I have had Sunday afternoon tea with Dame Patricia Routledge (best known as Mrs Bucket) a wonderful lady who is a classically trained singer and has starred in 3 Broadway musicals and 11 in the UK, a no mean feat, such a talented lady, and at 94 still as sharp as a knife.

My week only got better as on Tuesday we had our Coffee Morning and Art Class (thanks to all our members who stayed behind and helped us to clear up). In the evening we had our penultimate Evening Petanque, a very close encounter, but I believe the men, (supported by Gill), won!

Wednesday, our monthly Lunch at the Crown, where I had the opportunity to meet some of our new members, (not too sure of the impression that we gave them?) hopefully they will see that we are harmless. It is really good to see that we are having more members joining us from the Village.

My day finished with an evening with the Rev Richard Coles and a Q/A afterwards. I can now see why my family are envious of my lifestyle, how did we all find time to WORK?

See you all soon.

John W
Badminton

We will be running a trial Badminton session on the afternoon of Monday 19th September at 2:00pm. Please just turn up. If this proves to be popular, we may make it a regular activity. Please Email us at uparaupchurch@gmail.com for more information.

London Walk

Our second attempt to complete our Regents Canal walk will be on 23rd September, from Little Venice to London’s latest space at Granary Square, King’s X, with a lunch stop at Camden Lock. If you are interested, please let Bryn know, and to receive further details nearer the time, at uparaupchurch@gmail.com

More London walks are being planned, including Soho, which was going to be our next London walk before we were curtailed back in March 2020.

Lunch Club

There will be no lunch club in September. The next will be on Tuesday 25th October in the Crown.

Evening Petanque

Our last evening Petanque... for the Summer will be on September 27th. After a slow start, this has proved to be quite popular as an early evening activity and gathering. Hopefully, we will be repeating it during the Summer months of 2023.

2023

2022 may be only just halfway through... but plans for 2023 are brewing, with Linda and Sandra beginning to book our schedule of speakers and Malcolm and Brenda looking at next year’s trips and hols.

UpARA - August 2022 Newsletter

Hello UpARA members,

Our fundraising support for 2022/23

The committee have chosen the Church Bell Tower Restoration Fund as the project to support for UpARA this year.

It is an important project for Upchurch, basically, the roof and internal floors of the bell tower are in a very poor state and will become dangerous if not attended to soon. Bats and birds have got in and made a dreadful mess and the bells are no longer usable. The roof needs to be waterproofed and re-timbered as necessary, and the timber floors need to be replaced completely.

The estimate for works is currently £50,000, and the project is being led by one of our members, Elspeth.

We hope that everyone will assist in our efforts to support this project, more details to follow...

The thoughts of Chairman John

Hi everyone,

It could only happen to UpARA, to go on a Mystery Coach Trip on the hottest day ever recorded! The mystery was a little less when we drove down the M23, with Brighton as the destination; unbeknown at the time, the temperature in Brighton was 4 degrees less than that of Upchurch, and a refreshing sea breeze as a bonus, - a thoroughly enjoyable day, thanks once again to Malcolm and Brenda.

Bryn has mentioned our charity for the next year. As you know, we are quite good at raising money for charity, our last being the Village Hall refurbishment and the defibrillator, and just recently, a one-off fundraising day for the DEC Ukraine Appeal. Now we have returned much closer to home, (you can't get much closer to our meetings than the Church!). All our good wishes to Elspeth and we look forward to helping her with her latest project.

Finally, after a slow start, the Evening Boules seems to have "Taken Off" literally, although any purist would probably despair at our skills, but more to the point everyone had an enjoyable evening, which is the philosophy of all ARA's.

By the time you read this, our hardy walkers will (might!) have completed the Crab and Winkle walk from Canterbury to Whitstable, the August walk will retrace the boat trip we did in 2015 from Little Venice along the Regents Canal in hearing distance of the Zoo, and underneath the aviary.

Badminton

There have been expressions of interest in running a Badminton trial, likely to take place once or twice a month on Monday afternoons. If you feel you may be interested in participating, please let Bryn know at uparaupchurch@gmail.com

London Walk

We will be taking on another London Walk, on 19th August, from Little Venice to London’s latest space at Granary Square, King’s X, along the Regents Canal, with a lunch stop at Camden Lock. If you are interested, please let Bryn know, to receive further details nearer the time, at uparaupchurch@gmail.com

Brenda and Malcolm... will not be at the August Friday meeting to take bookings, payments and menu choices for the August lunch at The Crown, but will be at the Coffee mornings, or alternatively can be contacted via uparaupchurch@gmail.com

Brenda will also be taking the balance for the Turkey and Tinsel holiday. There are still limited spaces available for both twin and double rooms.

Our September meeting

Please note that our September monthly meeting will be held on the 3rd Friday of the month, September 16th, and not the second Friday that we normally hold it.
