New Commonwealth War Graves Commission Plaque at St. Mary's
Last year in 2016, St. Mary's, Upchurch was approached by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to ask if they would like a War Graves plaque indicating to passers by that there are war graves in the burial ground.
After consultation with Upchurch Parish Council who raised no objections, the Parochial Church Council agreed to proceed. They then spent some time in consultation with the Canterbury Diocese Advisory Board who gave their approval for the siting of a plaque on the brick part of the church wall to the left of the entrance gates.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission ensures that 1.7 million men and women of the Commonwealth forces who died in the two world wars will never be forgotten. They care for cemeteries and memorials at 23,000 locations, in more than 150 countries. Their values and aims, laid out in 1917, are as relevant now as they were 100 years ago.
