A load of old rubbish! |
Alison and Sarah Lewin with Councillors Mike Baldock, Alan Horton, Tyrone Ripley, Stephen Hunt and Gary Rosewell. |
Our ‘Great British Spring Clean - Upchurch’ took place over the weekend of March 3rd, 4th and 5th. With the support of Swale Borough Council, Biffa, Holywell School, Nursery Days, Brownies, Guides, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Cliff our village Caretaker, Upchurch Parish Council called on all villagers to volunteer as litter pickers and clean up Upchurch!
Friday 3rd - Young people from Holywell School, Nursery Days and Scouts all went out litter picking around our village.
Saturday 4th - Young people from Brownies, Guides, Beavers and Cubs all met at Drakes Lodge Scout Hut to continue Friday's good work.
Sunday 5th - Alison and Sarah Lewin joined Councillors Mike Baldock, Alan Horton, Tyrone Ripley, Stephen Hunt and Gary Rosewell. Between us we managed to cover all of the 6 planned litter picking routes around our country lanes. Heavy rain on the morning seemed to put the public off, but by the time we started the sun was out and we got a lot done.
This year it was the young people of the village, along with their leaders and teachers who really lead the way. Every one of the 200 pairs of small size disposable gloves we had were used, showing just how busy they all were!
This year it was the young people of the village, along with their leaders and teachers who really lead the way. Every one of the 200 pairs of small size disposable gloves we had were used, showing just how busy they all were!
Our tremendous 3 day village effort resulted in over 75 sacks of litter being picked from our public spaces and the surrounding country lanes. Well done everyone!
We'd like to thank Upchurch Scout Group for kindly letting us use Drakes Lodge Scout Hut over the weekend and to Vikki Sedgwick at Swale Borough Council for loaning us the equipment.
Thank you to everyone who gave up their time, this year’s response was better than we could have ever hoped for.
