Swale Borough Council - Kids Tell Parents - Don't be Idle!

Children across the borough are telling their parents to stop being idle, as part of a campaign to improve air quality outside their schools.

Pupils at Lower Halstow Primary School, Ospringe Primary School and Newington Primary School took part in a competition to design a banner to encourage people to switch off their engines outside the school gates.

The competition was organised by the council as part of its Clean Air for Schools initiative. This aims to highlight the harm caused by motorists not switching off their engines when they are waiting in traffic or outside schools at drop off or pick up times.

Council officers went to the school to talk to the children about air pollution and the risks it poses.

Cllr Tim Valentine, cabinet member for environment at the council, said:

“Idling engines cause unnecessary emissions, which contribute to air pollution that can be particularly harmful to young children.

Most people probably don’t realise the harm it does, but these banners will help people to think about how their actions are affecting others.”

The Clean Air for Schools initiative has been set up as part of the council’s air quality action plan and aims to work with schools to encourage sustainable travel options and raise awareness of air pollution.

UPDATE: The Co-op - Upchurch

We continue to receive a lot of messages asking when the Co-op - Upchurch is due to reopen. Thank you to resident Wendy Pitts for sharing this update she received recently from Robbie from the Co-op Executive Resolution Team.

Hello Wendy,

Thanks for your email to Steve Murrells, Co-op Chief Executive. Your email has been passed onto the Executive Resolution Team to reply on his behalf.

I've recently spoken to those in charge of this store, following contact from another concerned local resident. I've been informed that the works are now due to commence on 11th November 2019. Due to the nature of the structural works that are necessary, the proposed completion date is 27th January 2020.

That said, once the works have started, the team are going to look for ways that this can be expedited. I've been asked by senior managers in our Property and Construction teams to pass on our apologies for the previous dates that had been quoted in the past. This has been due to a change in staffing of the project, as the construction project manager has now left the business.

A newer style temporary store will be on-site around the 22nd November.

Whilst I appreciate your continued frustration, I do hope that this helps address some of your concerns.

Kind regards

Robbie
