Newington History Group

Upchurch and Lower Halstow residents can find out about Roman artefacts found in the villages at Newington History Group's meeting on Thursday, March 9th.

Details about the area's Roman occupation and the things left behind will be presented by Pauline Stevens, a local historian and former teacher, at 7:30pm in the Methodist Hall, Church Lane, Newington.

The History Group has been examining many items found recently alongside the A2 at Keycol Hill where there is thought to have been an important Roman camp.

Guests are welcome at the meetings on the second Thursday of the month. On April 13th you can hear about shipbuilding in Sheerness.

The group seeks to unearth, preserve and promote the history of the village and neighbouring areas. It organises special projects to enhance the area and works with the primary school in encouraging children to take an interest in their village's past.

An annual subscription is £15.

New Fares Initiatives from Chalkwell Coach Hire & Tours

Chalkwell Coach Hire & Tours has announced 2 new fares initiatives today which will provide additional benefits and savings to both younger and older passengers.

Holders of Concessionary bus passes as well as those with Kent County Council Young Person's Travel Passes will benefit from better value bus fares.

Concessionary bus pass holders, who are entitled to travel for free after 9:30am, until now have had to pay the full fare if they make a journey before this time.

Now anyone presenting one of these passes for travel before 9:30am will be able to pay just £2 to travel anywhere on the network. This provides a significant discount over normal adult fares and they will still be able to travel for FREE after 9:30am.

Holders of Kent County Council Young Person’s Travel Passes and 16+ Passes have only been allowed to travel for free between 6:00am and 7:00pm Monday to Friday. Holders of these passes can now travel anywhere on the network for just £1 outside of the free times. This also includes evenings and weekends.

The only exception will be between July 31st and the start of the September term when they receive their new passes.

These new fares initiatives take immediate effect.

Storm Doris at the Churchyard & Burial Ground

I have been up to the Churchyard & Burial Ground to check for storm damage.

I would like it to be known that in my quest to tidy things up, and with the utmost care and respect I have tried to return blown over items back to their proper place.

Many were scattered far and wide.

Thank you.
