Swale Borough Council - Get Ready for Winter with Free Salt

Beat the cold weather with free salt for your drive and pathways
.

Swale Borough Council is giving away free bags of salt this weekend for residents who want to grit their drives and pathways this winter.

Timed to coincide with the drop-in temperature this time of year, the council will be repeating its previous success by handing out the free sacks of salt across the borough.

Residents can collect their free 10kg bag this Saturday between 10am-2pm at:

Rose Street car park in Sheerness
 Forum car park in Sittingbourne
 Central car park in Faversham.

Martyn Cassell, head of commissioning, environment and leisure at the council, said:

“Colder mornings and darker evenings can make everyday tasks like getting the kids into the car for school or putting the bins out much more difficult, especially for those with mobility issues.

Potential icy patches can cause a slip hazard so we’re happy to help residents remain safe this winter.

While Kent Highways are responsible for gritting our roads, we recognise the benefits of residents being able to do their bit and help out others in their local area.

Last year we gave away 1,300 10kg bags of salt to residents across the borough to help them keep their drives and pathways clear in the colder weather.”

Supplies are limited to one sack per person, and are available on a first come, first served basis.

For more ideas and advice about staying safe and healthy over winter, visit our severe weather page.

Swale Borough Council - Fly-tipping Culprit Brought to Justice

Fly-tipping culprit brought to justice after household waste found dumped in Sittingbourne.

A man has been prosecuted after garage parts, wood, a hanging basket, roofing felt, broken up cabinets, furniture items and cardboard boxes were dumped along Ridham Dock Road last year.

Officers from Swale Borough Council investigated the fly-tipping and were able to trace the waste to a Chatham resident. When she was visited by the council, she discovered she had been the unsuspecting victim of an unlawful waste carrier.

The woman had enlisted the help of RM House and Rubbish Clearance via Facebook to clear her home of unwanted items. She admitted she had no idea the person driving did not hold the correct license to dispose of her waste.

The items were collected by a man driving a distinctive yellow flatbed truck owned by Mr Ryan Millard, aged 24, from Hale in Chatham.

Mr Millard claimed he shared the truck with a friend and had no knowledge of it being used for illegal fly-tipping. When asked however, he was unable to provide any personal details that would lead investigators to his friend.

Despite his account, as the person with control of the truck, Mr Millard is deemed to be responsible for the crime and was taken to court.

Mr Millard attended Medway Magistrates Court last week (21 Nov) and plead guilty to knowingly causing the illegal deposit of waste, receiving a £533 fine with £53 victim surcharge and £205 court costs.

A council spokesperson said:

“Fly-tipping is a criminal offence and something we take very seriously, so we’re happy with the outcome of this case.

Anybody caught having any involvement in the disposal of waste without a valid waste carrier license will be prosecuted.

We do want to remind people that anybody disposing of household items has to have a valid waste carrier licence. If you don’t check, and your waste is dumped, you could be prosecuted.

Always ask for a receipt and be cautious of waste collectors who will only accept cash.

Not only is fly-tipping unsafe, but it is a risk to wildlife, and it makes the borough an eyesore for everybody who lives here.”

To check whether someone is licenced to carry waste visit the Environment Agency website or call: 03708 506506.

Upchurch Village Hall Management Committee - Vacancy for a Minutes Secretary

Upchurch Village Hall Management Committee help maintain and run our local village hall and without this team of committed volunteers many local groups would have nowhere to meet.

The Village Hall has been used for over 60 years. The hall is currently used for the local pantomime, UpARA meetings, W.I. meetings, bowls, Tai Chi. It is also used by the Church and the School as well as for private functions such as Weddings, Anniversaries and Children’s Parties to name but a few.

We now need a volunteer to take minutes at our monthly meeting.

Meeting on every second Wednesday of the month we need a Minutes Secretary, someone to volunteer to attend and take the minutes at our monthly meeting, write them up and issue to the committee members. The ability to use Microsoft Word and Email would be useful whilst no experience of taking minutes is necessary.

If you have some spare time, about 3 to 4 hours each month, please consider volunteering for this role.

If you are interested, please contact Edward by Email: edwardm18@aol.com

Thank you

Medway council - Keeping Medway Clean and Tidy

Litter enforcement agents will soon patrol across Medway to encourage residents and visitors to dispose of their waste responsibly to help keep Medway clean and tidy.

Medway Council is working in partnership with District Enforcement and, from the end of November, officers will visit Medway’s high streets and town centres and engage with residents to remind them to take their litter home with them or to dispose of it responsibly in one of Medway’s 1,454 litter bins.

For the first week, the enforcement agents will issue warnings to residents and visitors but they will have the powers to issue fixed penalty notices to people seen intentionally dropping, throwing or leaving rubbish behind, including dropping cigarette butts as well as to those who fail to clear up after their dogs.

The officers will start in Medway’s town centres before visiting areas across Medway. Residents are also encouraged to report littering and dog fouling to the council online and the enforcement team will visit these areas.

Ruth Du Lieu, Assistant Director of Frontline Services at Medway Council, said:

“We work hard all year round to keep Medway clean and tidy for residents and visitors to enjoy and this is spoilt by the minority of people who litter. Anyone who is witnessed intentionally dropping, throwing or leaving rubbish can be issued a fine for £150, or, if prosecuted, faces a fine up to £2,500. I would like to use this opportunity to encourage people to love Medway, hate litter, and dispose of their rubbish responsibly.”

Dyl Kurpil, Managing Director at District Enforcement Ltd, said:

“District Enforcement is excited to be working in partnership with Medway Council with the sole aim of reducing the amount of littering and dog fouling occurring on the streets within Medway.

We will recruit and train staff locally to ensure that the service is delivered with professionalism and in a way that best reflects the Council’s priorities. All areas of Medway Council will be covered to encourage a positive change of behaviour relating to litter and dog fouling incidents.

Utilising our time-tested model of ‘Engagement, Education and Enforcement’ along with the deployment of enhanced technology, we will actively support Medway Council’s Love Medway – Hate Litter campaign.”

To report litter visit: www.medway.gov.uk/reportlitter

Littering carries a £150 fine (reduced to £90 if paid within 10 days)
Dog Fouling carries a £100 fine (reduced to £70 if paid within 10 days)
Public Space Protection Orders such as dogs needing to be on leads in certain areas, for example, when they are next to a carriageway. This carries a £100 fine (reduced to £70 if paid within 10 days)
