Newington's Commemoration to the Victims of the Somme

To mark the centenary of the start of the Battle of the Somme on July 1, a plaque remembering Newington's fallen in all wars was unveiled by parish council chair and Newington History Group (NHG) member Debbie Haigh.

Debbie is the great granddaughter of L/Cpl Henry Bishenden, of 1st Bn Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Reg), who was killed in an explosion on the Somme on September 3, 1916.

The plaque, provided by NHG, the Wickham Trust and Swale Borough Council, is situated among the poppies in the memorial garden under the village sign alongside the A2. Three villagers laid wooden crosses in memory of relatives.

The ceremony was attended by pupils from the primary school, who read a poem; representatives from the Buffs; WW1 funding representatives Martin Goodhew and Lyn Newton; County Councillor Mike Baldock; Swale Councillor John Wright; parish councillors; representatives from the Wickham Trust, allotment and history groups; the Rev Julian Staniforth and residents.

There was a two minutes silence and the playing of the Last Post.
